Multifamily Designer

Save job

A leading engineering consultancy in Austin, Texas is seeking a MEP – Multifamily Designer to join their dedicated team. This is an exceptional opportunity for you to contribute your technical skills and passion for community-focused projects within a supportive and award-winning workplace. The organization is renowned for its commitment to employee well being, flexible working arrangements, and fostering a culture of collaboration and professional development.

Key Responsibilities:

As a MEP – Multifamily Designer based in Austin, you will immerse yourself in the full spectrum of design activities required for successful multifamily residential developments. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve preparing intricate design documents using AutoCAD (and ideally Revit), collaborating closely with professional engineers to translate concepts into actionable plans. You will be entrusted with conducting site visits to observe construction progress firsthand—ensuring every detail meets rigorous standards—and interpreting field data into precise documentation. Your role extends beyond technical execution; you will also engage in project planning by estimating resource needs, setting milestones, anticipating constraints, and contributing valuable insights during proposal development. By maintaining meticulous records from project initiation through closeout and ensuring strict adherence to regulatory codes and industry best practices, you will help deliver safe, efficient living spaces that positively impact communities across Austin.

  • Prepare and maintain detailed design drawings, diagrams, charts, calculations, plans, and permits under the supervision of a Professional Engineer to ensure accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Develop both preliminary and final designs or establish design criteria for assigned multifamily projects using industry-standard methodologies.
  • Utilize AutoCAD proficiently—and Revit if possible—to create comprehensive engineering drawings suitable for bidding, permitting, and construction purposes.
  • Apply engineering principles by conducting studies, performing calculations, analyzing data, generating estimates, and referencing mathematical tables to support project objectives.
  • Conduct field observations at construction sites to verify contractor work aligns with approved plans and specifications while maintaining thorough documentation.
  • Interpret field notes accurately to prepare or oversee the preparation of plans and drawings that reflect real-world conditions and project needs.
  • Operate various computer-aided engineering design tools and analysis programs to enhance productivity and ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant regulatory standards (such as NERC, ANSI, IEEE, NEC) as well as local codes (IPC, IMC, UPC, UMC), applying these requirements effectively throughout each project phase.
  • Determine project requirements by estimating personal resources needed for completion while prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Provide input on engineering proposals and contracts; participate in negotiations regarding revisions or changes with architects, consultants, clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.

Key Requirements:

To excel as a MEP – Multifamily Designer in this respected consultancy environment, you will bring proven experience working on multifamily residential projects—ideally supported by formal education or extensive practical exposure. Your technical acumen with AutoCAD (and preferably Revit) will be complemented by your ability to navigate complex regulatory frameworks confidently. You thrive in settings where attention to detail matters just as much as open communication; your capacity for clear dialogue ensures smooth coordination between internal teams and external partners alike. Organizational skills are paramount: you consistently manage competing demands while upholding rigorous documentation standards across all stages of the project lifecycle. Your willingness to learn from experienced mentors while exercising sound judgment independently positions you as an invaluable contributor who supports both immediate project goals and long-term departmental success.

  • Associate Degree or Certification in a related Engineering Discipline combined with at least five years of hands-on experience specifically in multifamily projects—or alternatively eight years of relevant experience without formal certification.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in AutoCAD is essential for producing accurate technical drawings; familiarity with Revit is highly desirable to further enhance design capabilities.
  • Exceptional attention to detail ensures all aspects of design work are meticulously executed according to client specifications and regulatory standards.
  • Clear and effective communication skills enable seamless interaction with corporate managers, end users, engineers from other departments, contractors on-site, and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to interpret complex codes (including IPC, IMC, UPC, UMC) as well as national standards (NERC, ANSI, IEEE) to guarantee compliance throughout all phases of design.
  • Strong organizational abilities allow you to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining accurate filing systems from project inception through completion.
  • Experience utilizing computer-aided engineering tools alongside traditional mathematical references supports robust analysis during studies or calculations.
  • Capacity for independent judgment when adapting methods or techniques to unique project challenges—while remaining open to guidance from senior engineers—demonstrates adaptability within collaborative teams.
