How to get the promotion you want

Doing your job well is essential, but if you want to progress in your career, you need to show your employers why they should promote you and you need to demonstrate that in a positive, resilient and strategic way. Here are some tips to help you land your promotion.

Is a promotion likely?

Before you start a new job, look for a company that offers room to grow and opportunities for promotion. You don't necessarily have to work for a large firm, but you do want an organisation with enough growth and change to provide promotion opportunities to ensure you're not disappointed when it's time to discuss a promotion with your boss.

Excel in your current position

To get a promotion, you need to shine in your current role. Focus on doing your best work and consistently delivering excellent results. Meeting and exceeding your key performance indicators (KPIs) are crucial; it shows that you're not only meeting expectations but surpassing them. Outstanding appraisals and performance reviews matter, as do simple things like delivering on your commitments, meeting deadlines, managing stakeholder expectations and communicating proactively with teammates and colleagues. By consistently achieving your KPIs and demonstrating your reliability, you prove that you’re ready for the next step in your career.

Add to your skill set

Show your commitment to advancing by gaining new skills and qualifications relevant to the position you want. Staying up to date with industry trends and requirements is crucial. Consider taking courses, attending workshops, or earning certifications that will make you a stronger candidate for promotion.

Network and attend industry events

Networking is key to career advancement. Attend industry events related to the promotion you’re seeking. Meeting peers and learning about current issues and trends can help you prepare for the next step in your career. Plus, you never know who might become a valuable contact or mentor.

Talk to your team

One of the best ways to learn about the job you want is by talking to someone who’s already doing it. Ask them about their career path and how they climbed the ladder. Learning from their experiences can give you valuable insights and tips to help you move forward.

Get a mentor

Mentorship is becoming increasingly popular among professionals aiming to advance their careers. Find a good mentor and build a strong relationship with someone more senior. This shows initiative and demonstrates your commitment to growth. A mentor can offer guidance, support, and valuable advice as you navigate your career.

Be proactive

Take the initiative to discuss your career goals and aspirations with your manager. Let them know you're interested in advancing and ask for feedback on what you can do to improve your ability to progress. Being proactive about your career shows that you’re serious about your goals. Also, don't wait for opportunities to come to you—actively seek them out and apply for positions that interest you.

What companies look for in senior leadership promotions

While the steps to getting promoted are important at any level, the path to a senior leadership role involves a slightly different set of expectations. As you aim for more senior positions, companies will look for specific qualities that go beyond just excelling in your current role. Here are some skills you want to demonstrate you can excel in:

  • Strategic thinking: At senior levels, you’ll be expected to contribute to the company’s big-picture goals and make strategic decisions. Show that you understand industry trends and can develop innovative solutions that support long-term objectives.

  • Strong leadership: Leadership involves more than managing—it’s about inspiring and developing others. Demonstrate your ability to build and lead high-performing teams and create a positive work culture.

  • Financial savvy: Senior roles require a solid grasp of financial management. Highlight your experience with budgeting, financial planning, and how you use data to drive impactful decisions.

  • Clear communication: Effective communication and influence become even more crucial. Show your ability to articulate ideas clearly, negotiate effectively, and align others with the company’s vision.

  • Resilience and flexibility: Challenges and changes are part of senior leadership. Share examples of how you’ve handled difficult situations and adapted strategies to meet demands.

  • Alignment with company values: Promoting the company’s values is key. Make sure to demonstrate how your actions and decisions reflect the organization’s mission and culture.

Getting a promotion requires more than just doing your job well. It involves strategic planning, continuous learning, networking, and proactive communication. By excelling in your current role, expanding your skill set, building strong professional relationships, and seeking guidance from mentors, you can position yourself for success. Stay focused, stay motivated, and take charge of your career growth.
